Announcing our new magazine Prokopton: A guide for practicing Stoics
Prokopton, our new publication
While The Stoic Gym provides you a wealth of resources, it also creates a dilemma. Where do you start? Where do you go next? We have heard from many of you saying that, while THE STOIC helped you in your Stoic practice, you would like something more: A publication that is specifically geared towards systematic Stoic practice – a Stoic coach as it were. After five years of publishing THE STOIC, we are now ready to take up this new challenge. Starting in January 2024, we are starting a companion journal to THE STOIC, Prokopton.
Who is Prokopton for?
Prokopton is a monthly magazine for those who want to practice Stoicism systematically, from first principles. It is for those who have some commitment to live a Stoic life, to those who want to practice Stoicism seriously, rather than casually, and to those who want to put their Stoic foot forward, perhaps starting in the New Year.
What will you get?
Prokopton is more than a magazine. A subscription to Prokopton is a subscription to a program; it is total immersion. This is what you will get:
1. Prokopton daily (every day)
Starting January 1, 2024, you will get an email every day to motivate you to stay on the Stoic path. Each daily email will contain a different Stoic thought, with brief commentary, and suggestions for putting it into practice during the day.
2. Prokopton journal (monthly)
Prokopton will contain in-depth articles on
- Lessons in Stoicism
- Stoic exercises
- What are Stoic physics and Stoic logic?
- How did Stoicism come about?
3. Free Stoic books and reading materials
You will also get full-length books, additional reading material, audio recordings, as needed, every quarter. These are free of charge to our subscribers.
In short, this is what you will get when you join the Prokopton community:
Daily: Stoic thoughts and practice guide
Occasionally: Newsletters
Monthly: Prokopton and THE STOIC
Quarterly: Free audio recordings, full length books, or reading materials
Prokopton is practice-oriented
Prokopton is not a theoretical magazine. Its purpose it to be useful to the modern Stoic practitioner – to help the reader to become a good Stoic practitioner, not a Stoic scholar. So the articles are written in plain English with practical modern examples and exercises. Prokopton won’t make you a Stoic scholar, but it will make you become better Stoic.
Who is on our advisory board?
Prokopton is fortunate to have the support of a highly distinguished advisory board, with some of the best known academics and practitioners of the modern Stoic movement.
Christopher Gill, instrumental in starting the Modern Stoicism movement, is Emeritus Professor of Ancient Thought at the University of Exeter.
Margaret Graver, author of many books on Stoicism, is Aaron Lawrence Professor in Classics at Dartmouth College.
A.A. Long, considered one of the most eminent modern Stoic scholars, is Professor Emeritus of Classics, and Affiliated Professor of Philosophy and Rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley.
Donald Robertson, one of the most influential and best-known non-academics in modern Stoicism, author of many best sellers on Stoicism.
John Sellers, Reader in the History of Philosophy at Royal Holloway, University of London, is a prominent modern Stoic.
Is Prokopton for you?
Prokopton is not for everyone. It is designed for those who are serious about Stoic practice – those who want to become good Stoics and are willing to spend at least a few minutes every day in Stoic practice and an hour or so a week in Stoic reading. We will provide all you need to become good Stoics (Stoic lessons and exercises, reading materials, audio recordings) but we cannot do it without your commitment. So, if you are committed to take your practice to the next level, we would love you to join the Prokopton community. We look forward to being your guide in your Stoic journey.
