Leaving your comfort zone
We cover in this issue some of the less commonly discussed themes of Stoicism. Our contributors in this issue argue that we are used to comforts, pity others who are less fortunate, find it hard to cope with situations like the pandemic, find it difficult to cope with transience and imperfection, and we are tired.
Escape the comfort cage
“You don´t just need discomfort to acquire virtue, but to be virtuous. Like the red queen in Alice in Wonderland you need to run, just to stay in place. It´s not like once you reached virtue it's nothing but smooth sailing.”
The problem with pity
“So instead of giving in to pity, let’s train ourselves to truly help others by showing rational love and Stoic goodwill.”
Stoic-style coping: New research
“A study led by researchers at Harvard confirmed what modern Stoics already knew: It’s not the situation itself that causes our emotional turmoil, it’s how we think about it..”
Stoicism and wabi-sabi
“Wake up to the simple exquisite now. To this. Not to what could be, not to more would be better, but to a deep appreciation of the supposed minor details of everyday life.”

On being tired
“Tiredness is not just tiredness itself, but it is also a microcosm of human experience.”
The erotic Stoic
“Erotic love, ... would keep the city safe, and offer everyone the advantage of belonging to a family of multiple parents and close kinships. ”
The story of Marcus Aurelius [7]
“Men and women do not get married because marriage is legal, nor do they continue living together because divorce is difficult.”
